Engineered Pool Decommissioning

Removing a swimming pool is more complex than simply filling a hole with dirt. Without proper methodology, the backfilled area can suffer from severe subsidence, rendering the land unsuitable for future landscaping or construction.

Proper pool decommissioning requires punching holes in the shell to ensure drainage, removing the top layer of the coping, and then backfilling with clean, structural fill. Crucially, this fill must be mechanically compacted in layers (lifts) to achieve the required density.

This calculator provides an estimate of the bulk volume of fill material you will need. Keep in mind that loose fill compacts down, meaning the delivered volume must be greater than the final void volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

If the pool shell is left intact, it will act as a giant underground bowl, trapping groundwater. This creates a hidden swamp that will destabilize the fill dirt and any structure built above it.
