The Science of Safe Asbestos Remediation

Asbestos removal is the most highly regulated sector of the demolition industry. Safe remediation requires specialized equipment, rigorous training, and uncompromising adherence to safety codes.

Friable vs. Non-Friable Asbestos

Non-friable (Class B): Asbestos mixed with cement or other hard bonding materials (e.g., fibro sheeting). While less likely to release fibers unless broken, it still requires licensed removal.

Friable (Class A): Asbestos in powder form or that can be crumbled by hand pressure (e.g., loose-fill insulation, pipe lagging). This is extremely dangerous and requires maximum containment.

The Removal Protocol

For Class A removals, the area is sealed with heavy-duty plastic to create a 'bubble'. Negative air pressure units equipped with HEPA filters are installed to ensure no air escapes the containment zone. Workers wear full hazmat suits and continuous airline respirators.

Clearance and Certification

Once the material is lawfully wrapped, sealed, and transported to an EPA-approved facility, an independent Licensed Asbestos Assessor visually inspects the area and conducts air monitoring. Only when the air is proven clean is a Clearance Certificate issued.

Article FAQs

Can I remain in the building during asbestos removal?
No. For the safety of all occupants, the specific removal zone (and often the entire building) must be vacated until a Clearance Certificate is issued.
How do you dispose of the asbestos?
Asbestos is double-wrapped in 200-micron plastic, sealed, labeled, and transported in EPA-tracked vehicles to specialized, highly regulated waste facilities.
